France is often romanticized as the land of love, culture, and timeless charm. But for us, it was more than just a destination—it was a journey of self-discovery and a lens through which to view our world a little differently. In our latest episode, "Traveling France as an Interracial Couple: Paris and Strasbourg," we share the joys, challenges, and insights of exploring this beautiful country together. Listen to the full episode here.
A Journey Through Two Unique LensesAs an African American woman from the west side of Chicago and my partner Toby, a white man who grew up in New York’s Hudson Valley and lived in France during his early years, our travel experiences often carry layers of personal and cultural nuance. France offered us a refreshing sense of ease—especially in rural areas, where the hospitality and warmth we encountered stood in stark contrast to the apprehension we sometimes feel in rural parts of the U.S.
The streets of Paris welcomed us with their vibrant energy, a place where diversity felt woven into the city's fabric. Strasbourg, with its peaceful charm and mix of French and German influences, provided a quieter but equally profound cultural experience. Together, these cities offered a window into a society that, while not without its own complexities, felt strikingly different from our experiences back home.
The Dynamics of Interracial TravelTraveling as an interracial couple can be an exercise in vulnerability and awareness. In some places, subtle stares or whispers remind us of the barriers society still holds. In others, there’s an effortless acceptance that allows us to simply be. France, with its history of multiculturalism and evolving social dynamics, gave us space to reflect on the progress and challenges of race relations globally.
Our experience in rural France was particularly eye-opening. The absence of judgment and the genuine kindness we received stood in stark contrast to how rural America can sometimes feel—a stark reminder of how cultural perceptions and biases differ around the world.
Reflections on Love and SocietyBeyond travel, our journey sparked a deeper conversation about the evolving nature of interracial relationships. The rising rates of interracial marriages in America, particularly among Latino and Asian communities, reflect shifting societal norms. But they also prompt us to ask: How far have we come in truly embracing diversity? What lessons can we draw from countries like France, where multiculturalism is a lived experience for many?
Through our travels, we were reminded that love—regardless of race—is a universal language. Yet, it exists within societal frameworks that shape how it’s perceived, celebrated, or challenged.
